Hey guys, just wondering what your guys' procedures are to remove the transmission oil pump, I have got a 92 auto and need to replace the gasket in there. Any help would be appreciated!
This works on a 4l60 e. Not sure about your transmission.
After removing the pan and the filter (and the pump bolts), see if there is an opening in the case right by where the filter goes through. I can't remember if it is obscured by the valve body. The back edge of the pump and the front edge the the first transmission drum will be visible through the opening.
There is room to place a large, flat head screwdriver through the opening and get the blade between the pump and the drum. Then you twist, (not pry), and the pump will pop out.
Is this going to be a rebuild or just a leak fix? There are two teflon sealing rings on the pump that must be replaced when the pump is removed. The teflon seals require expensive special tools to install unless you get the scarf cut rings.

Just a leak fix, when running my transmission suddenly started leaking about a quart of fluid every couple of minutes. Aboatguy, any chance you could link? I was unable to find that thread.

Your transmission is noted for front pump seal and bushing failure. The bushing pushes out and takes the seal with it.
make sure you remove the tc lockup solenoid before removing the pump or you will break it. other than that.. just take the pump bolts out and pry it out..

That, and be sure to keep pressure on the output shaft so the drum directly behind the pump doesn't come with it. The clutches inside will come out and you will be working blind getting tham back in. Plus, you could unseat the 2-4 band, if you do that you will have no 2nd or 4th gear. I won't go into how I know this. What I would like to know is how that gasket has failed. I would follow M. Schumacher's advice, this sounds way more likely. They make a retainer for the problem he describes.
It's really not that hard, you just have to be careful getting the pump out with nothing else coming with it. I will say this, if you're not real mechanically minded then it would be best to have a tranny shop do it.
BUT, if it is only the front seal that has come out then you don't need to pull the pump. How did you arrive at the conclusion that it was that gasket?
