Default A little l98 advice..

WEll my project 1985 has finally won.. due to a host of previous owners "upgrades" mostly some stupid kids putting in a stereo and amp system that screwed the wiring up completely(ahem) I have finally given up trying to get the TPI to run correctly.. (if you are curious see the "very rich 1985" post on ecm tuning, the car runs ok.. but the MAF is sending some wierd signals or no signal so the car runs full rich all the time) in anycase the TPI is coming off and i will go with what I know.. Carb,Cam, aftermarket manifold and the good old HEI..
I will soon have a complete stock TPI set up with new EVERYTHING including bosch design 3 injectors for FIC up for sale.. the problems I am having are in the wiring and ecm..

The question I have is this.. with the L98 is there any reason with the above mentioned components that I couldnt push the power range up a bit.. my assumption is this.. the TPI and attendant pieces give a very torquey bottom end type engine, which would be similar to an edelbrock performer type setup idle to 5500 rpm, is there anything inherent in the L98 that would make a slightly hotter setup say 1500 to 6500 rpm (slightly bigger cam and intake ) not a good idea?

If you are going with a carb, you are going to change the intake anyway which will move the torque curve up. Go ahead and change the cam to one which is more aggressive since you won't be constricted by emissions requirements. Then go race the thing.

Underneath the TPI lies a regular SBC so all those old skool mods you know work.
The TPI cam is pretty wimpy on account of the TPI maxing out @ 4800 so a cam change is going to benefit the carb / intake setup.
The very ordinary '85 heads are going to be your limit point as to rev ability.

Thanks Guys.. i think thats exactly what im going to do.. now the 64 dollar question is .. How does one get the stock fuel pump to not blow the Carb completely off the engine?? Im guessing unregulated that pump will put out.. 60 psi or more.. Can i put a normal pump on and pull thru the pump in the tank? or pull it out and try to fab a pickup tube?

In any case at least this vette will be on the road and being enjoyed.. instead of sitting in the driveway making me nuts..

Go to Jegs or Summit and look for an inline bypass regulator. that will let you use the stock pump.

Thanks!! I found one from Aeromotive and Mallory.. Surprisingly the guys at the edelbrock tech line gave me part numbers.. I was checking to see which manifold would fit under the hood.. (turns out the performer fits the RPM will sort of.. .70 taller.. Sheesh.. If im gonna cut a hole in the hood its gonna have a blower sticking out of it.. (wait I think I just heard my Wife faint and the checkbook run screaming into the night...)
