I have yet to find the fiberglass covers that used to be available, but what do you guys think about them? If I can't locate a pair I may have to look into having something similar fabricated.
Appearance-wise, I like them, but I also like the stock look of my car.
Project-wise, I would need to have the exaust system fabricated from the end of long tube headers to the sides... not sure what complications would be encountered there.
Performance-wise... is there really any advantage? Maybe slightly less weight?
I dont think it would be too complicated to fabricate.
My only concern would be ground clearance of having to route a roughtly 3 inch tube under one of the lower parts of the body, plus allowing for space for heat and flex..
I remember when i was building mine i was concerned with ground clearance .. and that was with having a tunnel to route the tubes through.
my car is lowered a bit too

Aside from the custom work, I did notice nice gains with the exhaust. I eliminated the mufflers, so the only thing that makes the exhaust somewhat quiet are the cats. It has a nice deep rumble and drone from the interior. Sorry I don't have any pics of the actual exhaust, but you get the idea.
Looks wise I prefer the stock look. I know the piping for that system was very restrictive. With a custom setup that wouldnt matter though. I would also be concerned about the exhaust fumes when the door or windows are open. I'm thinking of all the times I've had to work on the engine with it running. I occasionaly jump in the seat to check the gauges, data-log, or rev the engine. Then again my exhaust is completely open so it may not be so bad on others. Lately I've been considering dumping it underneath or putting some mufflers back on with cutouts.

The only covers I ever saw --sold alone-- were made of ABS plastic, NOT fiberglass. Of course ABS wouldn't be as forgiving to heat if you routed the pipe too close. Really, I didn't think it was a good idea to run any decent size pipe thru the exhaust cutout.
The original company that made "SideEffects" sidepipes doesn't have any more covers either. They contracted out the covers to a 3rd party fiberglass company that would want a run of 100 units to make them again.
Before I put the set (that took me two yrs to find) on my car, I thought about making cast molds of the outlets in case of damage. I didn't get around to it, but may wish I did some day.
You do have to be careful around town to avoid tearing them up. Mine came with "jacking plates" that hang 1/2" lower than the fiberglass covers. They hit every now and then, but I've been lucky to avoid damage. Those plates help.
As for making your own, I put down some thoughts a couple of years ago. If you do a search, you can probably find it.
I did lots of thinking about how to route pipes straight back from the manifolds w/o turns. And, seriously considered how to get decent muffling to avoid excessive sound. I decided there were too many potential sound, fitment, and clearance issues to make/remake a set until acceptable.
If your motor's not "built", there's nothing wrong with finding a used set of SideEffects and connecting your headers to them. My best calculation has them good until 350rwhp. You can use them above that but some loss will occur.

I looked. That set has "custom" sound chambers. That's something I'd want to see pics of before purchasing (if I were a bidder). While it's certainly possible to fabricate a custom set, I'd want to know why and how well they're made.
The sound chamber also serves as the front mounting point for the sidepipes. And, the stock chambers are heavy-duty alum castings. If done incorrectly, I'd wonder about frame vibrations, canister burn-out, or other ways for it to go wrong.
Does anyone else get a site maintenance msg when clicking on this link? I've seen the EXACT same msg for 3-4 sites recently. It's probably a canned msg from the developer's toolbox, but I want to eliminate a bug issue.

Spray paint it silver to simulate the original chrome??

Yeah.. If I were to do it, all I would use would be the covers. Id fab something to exit there....and you better bet it wouldn't have muffflers of any sort.
Well, I decided to go with replacing the regular exhaust since I can't locate the covers. I was on the fence anyway... still surprised they aren't out there given the interest that seems to be present.
I've got them and love them (the Side-Effects kit). I recently had them re-done at a local autobody shop. All of the scratches, dents, and cracks removed. The sounds is fantastic, and the look (now, after having them refinished) is great.
That would be crazy! I wonder if it could be done!?!? I guess you would have to get custom headers made and find a way to mount the chambered side pipe... Bet it would sound awesome!!!
