Essentialy they are just putting a chunk of steel on the inside of the cover that puts pressure on the bearing caps to help them stop flexing and unloading your diff. I have sold a similar product for the 8.8" ford rear end:

Could I not just weld in those steel chunks and put some allen head set screws through a tapped hole and essentially do the same thing.
Its funny you posted this at this time. I have a zip 3.54 rear that only has about 3,000 miles on it. It always ran quiet, and I was going to sell it. I pulled the batwing off of it, and found 2 teeth off of the spider gear in the bottom. Then I found one of the bearing caps cracked. The support would have certinally helped with that crack at least.
Its a wonder it didnt blow before I pulled it. But as I said, it was always quiet.
BTW the motor was bone stock at the time I was using it. And I never used any tires except for mich. pilots.

BTW, notice inside the bat cover, it came from the factory with the supports molded in, that put pressure on the bearing caps. That is basically what the other cover does that you were looking at.
