In attempting to adjust, I had to drop the steering column. When I did, the key switch caught on the protruding portion of the hush panel and broke it off. (See image)
I put the switch back together as good as I could and I got it to turn over but now it won't fire up! Could the problem be the key switch (VATS)? If it is what is entailed in replacing it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Reason: spelling
It wouldn't be VATS if she's turning over. VATS disables the starter and all you'll get are dash lights and the sound of crickets. Looks like you did a number there though. I'd be replacing that cylinder for sure.
Could be you pulled some other wiring, but I'm not familiar with the '86. Free bump though.
