Im looking for a Very loud and deep sounding exhaust system for my 1994 lt1/6spd corvette. Not open header loud but louder then flowmaster's or magnaflows
I have a few questions about exhaust sound.
1: What effect on the sound does larger exhaust pipe have? (ie: 2-1/4 vs 2-1/2" )
2: which is louder, mufflers in the middle of the car on at the rear?
3: which has a deeper tone, middle or rear mounted mufflers?
4: Will changing 1.5 rockers to 1.6 roller rockers change the sound of the exhaust?
5: What is the center resonator on the 92-96 cars do? and what is inside of it?
I would say listen to some sound clips on youtube. Im assuming that larger piping would make it sound deeper, but if you are only talking 1/4 inch difference it wouldnt be noticable. I also dont think the location of the mufflers will make any noticable difference either considering everything else is the same. I hear it makes it louder if you remove the precats, but dont remove the main cat due to emissions, extra black smoke, and a possible nasty sounding exhaust

Reason: More info
When my car was basically stock, I went with the slp power flow exhaust. No resonator, just straight pipes. The mufflers are also straight threw. It gave the car a nice low tone muscle car sound at idle and really barked up top.
Thats nice, That is the sound Im looking for. It's loud with out being trashy. perfect. Yours in an lt-1? You have the stock cam and lifters? etc? Thanks.
Its hard to hear exhaust from a computer, 90% of clips I see are just distorted. But that one sounded nice

Your exhaust is 2.75 from the factory. The center resonator is pretty restrictive.I would replace/remove it first.Magnaflow mufflers would probably be pretty loud without the resonator.Bear in mind every muffler(a bunch)I have run has been louder inside the car than outside.no fun for cruising.
I do have LT headers and 3" exhaust w/o cats so maybe that's why.Hmmm.Now I have the 2.5 cat back from Corsa and it is nasty on the throttle but nice inside for cruising.I wish I had spent the money the first time.
I've heard Billy Boat exhaust systems are pretty loud.
the placement of the muffler will make a HUGE difference. You'll get the burbling sound when you lay off the throttle if you run muffler eliminators and keep the center muffler (resonator).
I run the magnaflow system that was recently released for the LT-x crowd. it's actually pretty quiet (in comparison to the flowmasters that I was running before). This was before I installed the headers ( I am in the process of adding the headers and eliminating the cats).
The best advice I can give you is to go in order of expense (least expensive first).
It wont sent you back much to have the rear mufflers removed completely and have the shop install the correct angle bend with your existing tips on it (or you can replace the tips if you wish). Try that out first, you might like the sound.
or
you can buy the muffler eliminters off the auction block, or several of the corvette parts suppliers. The going price is usually $100-200 dollars.
the magnaflow is relatively quiet, so i would just stick with one of the following
B&B
Corsa
the corsa is EXPENSIVE, and it's actually smaller diameter piping than the stock stuff. It's also relatively well manored and top notch stuff, but probably wont be as loud as you'd like
Dont know how late i am but corsa or borla are the way to go to get that nice throaty and girgle sound plus it increases your flow by like 40 some odd persent they are a liitle more than the others but complettly work the money as for headers not to sure i have a 94 with the lt1 and havent come accross to many options there besides hooker and jba. I had a 88 before with corsa and was blown away by the sound and difference it made hope this helps

I have a 96 stock LT1..i removed my resonator and added flowmasters in the stock positions with factory tips.. i cant say im crazy bout the sound,It's louder inside then out, i wanted it to be louder then it is..
so im not satisfied , maybe with a set of headers and a cam it'll give me what im lookin for.Good Luck
Take straight pipes and run them in the drivers window.
Am I missing something? are they a prize for getting you post count up or for *** of the month or something??
Why are they so many stupid comments on the forum that have nothing to do with the OP at all?
Are you looking for someone to say "ha ha Your so funny" Or what?
I just don't get it.......
Why would you want to say something so childish to someone asking for option?
On almost every thread their is least one guy who says something stupid, for no real reason.
Maybe I should just try it.. I should go to other forums, type stupid comments like " you should kill yourself" and "Thats what she said!" And just see if I wake up tomorrow with A prize on my door step......see Ive already started
Thanks guys for the help, Im going to look into the corsa's If I can find them a little cheaper, Maybe used..
But I think Im going to try the muffler elm's first. And if that gives me the Db level Im looking for I might try the true dual "chamberd" exhaust system corvette centrel sells.
BTW: After looking around SLP is selling their "high flow" resonator for the 92-96's for only $49.99. Marked down from $199 good deal

Don't forget to check Fleabay
I bought my setup used for $900 Shipped. That included the catback system , cat elims and Hooker ceramic coated super comp headers.

Good deals are out there , just gotta be patient.
Yeah you got a good deal.. One question. How hard is it to install the headers on a C4? The last time I put headers on, I said I would NEVER do it again. It was usch a PITA (Slp LT's on a 99 camaro)
Can it be done without removing alot of the parts like motor mounts, starter, steering shaft etc? And is it eazer to go from the top or bottom? I was thinking since I will have my hood off to paint anyway, I would remove the motor mounts and transmission mounts etc, and lift the motor up just enough to put the headers on and drop it back down. Or would it be eazer to go from the bottom?
Iwent with muffler elims and replaced the stock resonator with a magnaflow resonator. It has an x-pipe inside of it, flows better than the stock piece. I don't have a clip, sorry, but the sound is very racy without being obnoxious. With the hot cam it sounds really good. I get tons of compliments from car guys and the ricers back off when I rev it. Oh, I've never had a complaint from the police, but I'm sure I would if they ever caught me at WOT. But then I think exhaust would be the last of their issues
The stock resonator is simply a box with perforated 2.5" pipes going through it. I did the elims first, so I ran for a short time with the stock resonator. The sound was alright but a little harsh accelerating. The Magnaflow rounded the tone out and made it acceptable inside the car.
Before you do anything, look into the Corvette Central's "Chambered Exhaust" tuned for the LT1's. They will be legal and plenty loud with the low throaty tone you want.
Look for my posting with them on my '94 LT1 (with the LT4 hot cam) and shorty headers installed.

Is that the FULL chambered exhaust or the chambered muffler elms?
My plan was to buy their full dual exhaust kit with the muffler elms, and work my way from their. I figured it is easer to stat with too loud and work my way to tone the sound where I want it. Starting with the SLP resinator.

I'm sure someone threw it out there by now, but I had the 3" B&B Tri-Flo on my LT1. I also had RandomTech high-flow cats with it. The sound wasn't quite where I wanted it so I removed the resonator (has a center resonator and mufflers) and replaced that section with straight pipe and I was set. I've never been more happy with an exhuast. Now if I could just buy the equivalent set for my C6
