Default c3 guy with c4 question

well, i fixed the injectors on the 91. I actually am starting to love c4's. what a great car!
question is, is there a trick to getting these things to run cool? owner says its runs hot. fans are not coming on until the gauge is in the red. i want to put a new thermostat in the car because he says he put in a 180 stat himself. and how do i know if the fluid is making it up to the throttle body, with no air bubbles in the system? c3's are tricky to fill up all the way, so i was just wondering.

My 91 Never gets in the red even on a 100* day sitting in traffic.

Install the stock 195* Thermostat and do a Complete coolant flush also, remove the knock sensor on the passenger lower side of the block to completely drain the coolant from the block or install the Prestone Backflush tee to backflush the block which is what I do.

When done with the backflush, fill with a 50/50 mix of Green coolant and water and with the heater On/engine idling wait until the thermostat opens and the coolant goes down, then top off with more water and you're done.

Is the water pump original? if so, it may be bad. My car started to run hot, new water pump fixed it. I went to a high flow pump, made a real difference.

Have you cleaned the area between the radiator and the AC condenser ?
If not remove the radiator and clean out the leaves, plastic bags and other mystery chit that gets in there.

I'm curious, you did this without any signs of water pump failure (ie. leak)? And it fixed the problem right away?

The pump was leaking very little, not enough to notice, or leave a puddle on the ground. I also replaced the T-stat and the hoses at the same time, but it was the new pump that made the difference.

The radiator is the first thing to check if your car is running hot. Pulled mine to clean it out and thing was PACKED with leaves / debris. FYI: you will need to discharge the A/C to pull the radiator.

Also know, if you are running a car above 230 degrees or so you are greatly increasing your chances of blowing a head gasket.

No need to discharge the AC system to remove the radiator on a 91 Vette.

thanks for all the replies. i will get with the owner to see if he has debris in his rad, although i went through the car pretty thouroghly when i did the injectors, and didnt notice any debris. he's got a rubber flap that goes under the air intake that doesnt quite fit the way i think it should and i want to change the t-stsat, but it's curious why the fans dont come on until it hits ( the gauge ) 260
