Default accel gen 7 pain in the backside

when trying to program and save global files the unit always has communication errors. I cant save anything at all. whats up with that?

Also when trying to set timing I force the timing to be set at like 20 degrees and when checking it is bouncing all over the place. How do you get it so it isnt going nuts?
whats the proper procedure? I cant even start to tune anything without knowing where the timing is set.
thanks to anyone who can help.

when the timing is forced isnt it supposed to be steady on a # on the balancer? mine bounces around between 10 and 30 all over the place when set to 20.

Yes the forced timing should be steady. Are you running a dual sync? Is it a stand alone or piggy back to the factory ecm? Clearly it is not controlling your timing. Are you getting the comunication error saving to your laptop?

I am thinking the distributor is bad, it is the original stock gm for my 86. My timing is all over the place. I have the timing locked to 20 degrees on the accel gen 7 stand alone and its jumping anywhere from 10 to 30 degrees. I am also getting all kinds of knock under any load. I cant seem to take enough timing out to make it run without knock and it is also near stalling when the timing is reduced. If I had the money I would buy the dual sync tomorrow, but with th economy as bad as it is money is super tight.
The ECM has trouble communicating consistently, I was wondering if you have to set a buad rate or something. Its a newer laptop that doesnt have a serial port thats needed and I am running a USB adapter.

In order to get a reliable communication connection, you need to use the older laptop with a serial port connection. You can probably pick up a Dell D600 laptop on ebay for $200. Some people has better luck with the USB adapter but I had never have any luck with it. I had tried few different brands of USB adapter and end up throw it in the trash can. But when it connected to the D600 laptop it works wonder.
