Default Find used D44 ??

Hi Guys,

I'd like to swap out a D36 with 2.59 great to a D44.

Does anyone know a yard that they would recommend to find a used D44?
I'll need the drive shaft, c brace, D44, and the bolts.
All the parts from one car would be best.

made a request with Dino in MS.

Thanks,

Unfortunately, this seems to be a swap that many of us would like to make...
l believe that the parts yards are well aware of this also and charge a pretty steep fee for one should they have it...
My best advice is to keep an eye on craigslist, these forums, and ebay for a potentially decent deal!

Edit, Here is a potential lead on a complete car that is probably less then a D44 itself at a yard, I can not guarantee total/simple interchangability, but....

Call or go to Contemporary Corvettes in PA, they use the Ebay name of "Fparts". They have Dana 44's in 3.07 - 3.33 - 3.45 - 3.54 most of the time, and once in a while have a 3.73 or 4.10 unit as well. They sell "all" the parts in a kit form to do the swap, that is where I got mine from...and they warranty them also.

Man no kidding huh.

Ebay has what I want for about 1600. May take it.

The 85 vette is cheaper but no extra room.

Is seem pretty straing forwared to replace. Don't have a lift though. Is this job a is a PIA to do on jacks?

Its a pretty simple swap. I've done it and I did it without a lift.

There is a tech tip in the archives that pretty much spells it out.

I've seen some D44s in the for sale section recently and they may still be for sale. Only parts needed IMO (is the batwing, c beam drive shaft and diff ) I know that some folks redrill the c beam but for some reasom I did not have the clearance to fit the longer c beam. Other folk use a d36 batwing with a spacer plate however, I'd rather use the D44 bat wing rather than cobble something together.
Good luck
Mike

reasearch dana 44 hd rear ends before you go looking for them. I found out the hard way that some early six speed cars had a rearend that looked a lot like the dana 44 hd from the outside but had smaller bearings and internals. Turns out some places won't even accept this rearend as a trade in to get a rebuilt unit. Good Luck

Good tip.

The one from fparts is from a 96 with 77K. Should be ok. Nice guys to deal with.

Corvette Salvage wants a little over $2k for the same.

Sure it wasn't a D44 from a late C3? Similar but completely different unit. Has the smaller internals

I believe that the rearend to look out for was built it 1985 but just for a few months. It has a dana 44 housing but all the internals are lite duty. It was the first stages of dana 44, they hadn't figured how to build them stronger yet. That's why dana 44 H D are listed as starting in 1986 I believe. Watch out for them!
