Should be FEL-1074 for LT1, compressed thickness=0.039".

The 1074 is the Impala head gasket, and the 1003 is .041 compressed, I looked up Fel Pro (federal mogul) and they have several gaskets , but they dont say what car. The 1003 is for my LT-1, but there is a 1010 also, a 1004 . It goes through about 5 different ones, some obvious, some questinable. I just dont want the wrong compression ratio after the fact as I m using 58 cc heads, 2 cut outs on pistons, not factory. With 55 cc heads this motor made 11.1-1 with a standard Fel Pro gasket, but I dont have the number. If I use the 1074 I will be about 11.5-1. Too High for me on a street motor. Steve

fixing compression by increasing the quench area thickness isn't a good idea, imo. i don't know anything about your engine, but most stock lt-1 bottom ends have pistons pretty far in the hole (like .020" or more). use a .040" thick head gasket, and the quench area becomes .060" thick.

even though the compression is lower, some engines are more prone to detonation from the thicker quench area. in fact, built lt-1s with zero deck height tend to detonate less than stock, even though the compression is higher.

another thing to consider is the actual cc of the chambers. they're rarely at the "advertised" numbers.

while i have your eye (ear), maybe you can give me the scoop on which gasket is which. is the impala gasket thicker, or thinner, than a y/f body gasket?

thanks.

Thanks for the help. My motor (396) was built by More. I have aftermarket pistons, pretty solid bottom end, billet crank, etc. The problem I was having was knowing what gasket was on the motor now. It has heads with a 55 cc combustion chamber, and has 11.1-1 comp. I was under the impression the gasket was a thicker than the Impala gasket, Fel Pro 1074, but come to find out it was the 1074. SO with My heads, 58cc comb chamber, I dont have to worry about going over 11-1. Impala head gaskets give .3-.5 more compression, and I thought becasue I had a thinner head gasket, even with only 3cc more chamber, I was going to go over 11-1. Now I know I am not, plus I have a hair more duration to help drown out the duration. Thanks, Again, Steve

The only gaskets Fel-Pro makes are the 1074's, and the stock replacments. Those are the only LT1 gasket they make. It is not vehicle specific, but, it may alter your compression if the stock gasket is 0.050.

No other Fel-Pro gaskets will fit "p" or "5" motors. The other gaskets are for previous generation SBC's and other applications, but no other reverse cooling SBC gaskets are made by them
Good Luck,
Vic

Thanks, I pretty much agree. after going to the website, that is the only gsket that Fel Pro says is for the LT-1 Lt-4. The rest of the are for the motor, but dont say LT-1 or LT-4 only. I think the rest on the website for Fel Pro are small block chevy. Not very good if you put the wrong one on. The 1074 is almost identical in compressed height to a Impala SS head gasket, which allot of people use for increasing compresson. Steve
