I'm putting new roller rockers on and I noticed that SOME of my lifters seem to have a spring in them when I push down on the pushrod. When I tighten down the rocker arms should they have that little play from the spring in the lifters or should it be solid? Thanks
They all have a spring in them. The ones that feel "springy" have bled down, happens sometimes and makes it a little harder to adjust. When you determine zero lash, make sure that you have NOT compressed the spring at all before doing your "x" number of turns of pre-load.
Ageed, if you adjust say 1/2 turn down from zero lash and come back to that same rocker later the pushrod will feel loose again. It doesn't take long for the lifter to bleed down.
I've always adjusted my lifters with the motor running.. I'd back off until I'd here it ticking then tighten it until the ticking stopped & then go 1/2 turn more..
You have to be a little careful of oil spraying from the other lifters, but it can be cleaned up..
I've adjusted them with the motor running and without. Without here is what I do. Tighten the nut until you just barely start to see the spring compress, I'm talking 1/128th of an inch here. Then I back off half a 1/4 turn, tighten the center allen down, then tighten the nut as far as it will go, which is usually about 1/4 to half a turn back. This locks them so they won't back out as quickly. If you just try to tighten the allen nut with the outer nut already tight you'll never get them to stay.
