My MAF on my 1986 coupe is driving me nuts. The car had a problem that when I went for a drive it had a strong fuel odor at the back of the car when I returned home. It got worse and the MAF was broken (no codes but ran better when disconnected) Tried a good MAF and it worked better. Replaced the MAF and the relays. Worked for a bit but now back to the same problem...strong fuel odor at the back and the MAF seems to be giving out. Is this a computer problem?

under the car, about where the driver sits, there is a small 3/16" hose that connects to the vapor cannister line. THe factory couldn't install this line without a splice, so they added the little hose under the driver on the bottom of the car. When this hose rots out, the car smells.

Also have you inspected ALL the under hood electrical connections?
The 86 is notorious for shrinking wire insulation that exposes copper at the connector ends.

THe car only smells of fuel at the very back of the car. Some have suggested leaking injectors that are spraying too much fuel which comes out the exhaust.

One wire on one of the MAF relays has some exposed copper. Has had it for years. It is the only exposed copper that I can see.

You will need to pull & inspect every connector in the engine bay.
The wiper motor and MAF/Burn off relays are the most common.

I repaired at least 4 connectors when I first acquired my 86.
Simply pop out the lead and slide on a small piece of shrink tubing on each wire and return to its location in the connector.

This is the main culprit for early C4's with engine bay fires.

Yep, combine this with a few oil leaks and you got a bar-b-que in the making
