I am having idle problems some times when I stop, but not all the time. I believe it could be a problem with the EGR valve sticking. The valve is new as I replaced it when I installed a new intake. Has anyone with a 1985 corvette eliminated the valve buy installing a solid plate? Did you make the plate or buy one already to install? Will you get a check engine light if you install a plate? If so, is their a way to eliminate the light problem?
If your car is only idling bad ( sometimes ) it sounds like your IAC is hanging up ( sometimes) , take it out and clean it or if its bad replace it..WW
Should have mentioned I replaced the IAC valve thinking that was the problem. I have also understand this problem can be caused by a sticking throttle body. Idle problem maybe 1 out of 4 stops. Car runs great otherwise.
You will not get a check engine light with a plate, just keep everything installed and make a simple sheet metal plate and install it in the crossover tube from the manifold to the exhaust. Any side will do, they are same plate template. Put it under the gasket and reinstall everything.
The egr doesn't operate at idle,(or full throttle,) it stays closed until you hit the gas and build up rpms. The only thing on the egr that can affect idle is if you have a carbon buildup which causes it to stick, or a leaking diaphram which causes a vacuam leak, and if the egr is new its probable not these problems. The biggest problem with a egr elimination is you may have engine knock or ping after removing it, some cars do, some don't, but in my experience I have found it better to leave it on if you can..Have you hooked the car up to a scanner? This should be the first thing you do when your having engine problems you can't identify .WW
If it's stalling, '85 Service Bulletin addressed that issue instructing Dealer's to raise the Minimum Idle to 500 rpms. PROM was subsequently redesigned; doubt it's available, so Minimum Idle adjustment may be all that's available. If it's surging, better to scan, but if the TPS has an intermittent short to ground on the return signal, voltage increase will cause the ECM to think it's accelerating. Check TPS connector and make sure it's intact - wriggle it around to see if it duplicates whatever problem you're having OR post the specific problem.
