I 'm going to start today on pulling the heads to replace the gaskets. The manul states to totally remove the exhaust maniflod and i'm curious..must i do this or may i just disconnect the manifold at the flange and remove the head and exhaust manifold as one piece?

You should pull the exhaust manifolds off first so you can gain access to the head bolts.

This is the proper way to do it.

Good luck.

It is possible to do as I did the passenger side w/o completely removing the exhaust manifold. I only did this because it was frozen to the y pipe, and overall it slowed me down at least an hour. If you can remove them I highly suggest doing it as it makes removal of the heads much easier. Good luck. At least you don't have to take off a tpi.
