Alrighty.....I received a ported Eddy Hi Flo manifold yesterday and I have a couple of questions for the flowmasters that hang out here. The holes on the runner side measure 2.8 inches in diameter, I can almost fit 3 fingers in them. The head side ports look pretty stock with not alot of room for porting. I have the stock 624 iron heads and can now see why a head upgrade might be in order. So does it really do any good to have the fat ports that neck down to the stock configuration going into the heads? Does anyone know the measurements of the square port on the head side of the stock manifold? I also have a chance to get a set of SLP's cheap, but they are for the non cold start motors. Can I just drill a hole in them for the injector? I plan on max porting these. It looks like there is a spot on the casting for them. Future plans include some Eddy RPM heads and a 260 Comp XFI cam.
Just cap off the cold start injector line on the back of the fuel rail and don't use it. I would not run the risk of trying to machine one into the SLP's. Unless you are driving the car in very cold temps you should not have a problem except for maybe slowstarting.
Unfortunately I live in the great white north, but I may consider going cold start injectorless. I measured the square port on my manifold....it is 1.12 inches X 1.9 inches....does anyone know if this is the stock dimension?
Keep the stock runners on until you do all the mods.I ran SLPs on a stock engine and it sucked.I took them off...The stock TPI felt better in all ranges on the street, even WOT.Since you plan to max port them, dont install them on a stock engine until you have your cam/heads/etc ready.
The CS problem,You can however, get your prom to have cold start enrichment and get rid of the CS injector. The later TPI cars dont use a CS injector and the prom is worked to provide faster cold start ups, etc.
Getting your prom to handle the CS mode would be the ideal way to go.
Have that done when you have a prom burned to handle your new cam, heads, intake and etc.
Forgot to add,I lived in NY state when I had my 86 and removed the CS valve with no prom work.It took a little bit longer to start the car up in the mornings, but it always started up just fine.We had temps of 5 to -15 on cold days there and alot of snow. With a prom modded to address that problem, you should be better.
Thanks for the response Agg. I am probably going to wait until I get some heads and a cam. I have done some more research, and always being budget minded, I think I have changed my head choice to some Eddy E-street heads. Since I have chosen to stay with a long ram set up, I will limit my cam and head choices to the 5500 rpm range. The E streets are only 900 bucks and seem to be a really good deal for a head in the 3-400 HP range. I read a article in Hot Rod where they outflowed the Vortecs on a 383. I originally wanted a Comp 260H XFI, but I might consider the 268. I think I will tackle long tube headers this winter also. I measured the intake port openings on some 624462 heads I have laying around, and they are pretty much the same size as the square base ports on my Ported Eddy. So when I get the new ones, I will be doing some port matching. Also a chip burn is on the horizon as well.
