Does anyone know what type of rear end axle an 86 has stock? Has anyone had to change thier rear end due to higher torque and hp from thier engine? and at what rating?

First off the 2.59 ratio is not good for any kind of performance other than fuel economy when cruising. Then HP and torque will vary somewhat due to tire traction (drag radials vs street tires) so an exact answer is impossible. A very general response is that the D36 with a stock Auto trans is safe to 400 hp, maybe slightly more.
