Default Rough Acceleration

I have a 1984 Vette. When I accelerate its very rough to the point I have to depress the gas pedal hard enough to jerk the car forward.
Any ideas on what I can check myself without a trip to the garage?

Do a regular tune up first; plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, and maybe ignition module. These things need to be done first. Then if the problem is not resolved, you need to check the tps and map sensors and fuel pressure.

Also, does the check engine light come on? How does it run otherwise?

The light does not come on, however a lot of the dash lights stay on and then go off as they please sometimes all the lights come on and the tach, and speedometer work and other times all the lights come on and dont do anything. if u get on it it runs fine, but from a stop it takes a bit to get it movin.....
