Default Flywheel balance?

When installing a new OEM style flywheel for a manual transmissioned small block Corvette engine (L98, L48 or 327), do you normally have to balance the flywheel prior to installation or just install it out of the box?

It should be zero balanced so ok to install it out of the box. I used to have mine checked and rebalanced by a machine shop just in case.

Normally? That is a loaded question. Up until 1985, 4" bore and smaller sbc engines were all internally balanced, and had a neutrally balanced flywheel or flex plate. In 1986, when they went to a one piece rear main seal, the crank flange changed and the flywheel had to have an imbalance to compensate for the change in the flange. L98s were made both ways. Particularly 1985 and older, you should be fine "out of the box".
