Default Pleaseeeeee help

I am changing the alterntor in my 1989 vette. I got it off w/o a problem. Now of course I can't get the belt to fit on the new alternator. It seemed like the belt locked when i took the old one of. How do I make this belt fit around alternator. My understanding is I need to release the tension. i am just unsure how to do this. I don't have a haynes or clinton. No stores had one I am going to order it off amazon.

Any input on how to get the belt on the new alt would be greatly appreciated as i am stuck now.

Find the tensioner on the pass side of the engine. Notice it has a square hole in it that your 1/2 inch drive ratchet fits in. Run the belt around all pullies except the alternator. Push tensioner over, loop elt on alternator, the release tension and remove ratchet.

You need a 1/2" breaker bar to move the idler pully on the pass side of the car. Check out the routing diagram on top of the radiator. If you don't have the breaker bar, you can do it w/ your hand, but it is very difficult.

Re-read our helpful, descriptive posts. We did not mention a bolt. No bolt is involved in belt installation, or tensioning.

Get the FSM don't spend the money on a Hanes.I did and it just won't do you much good because it covers 12 years worth of vette's.I have found many things that are wrong or no info.I doesn't even tell me how to remove my 95 door panel,I had to go on this form to find out where all the screws were. The Hanes manual covers more on the early models than it does the late model C4's.

Your posy is very helpful, and I just suck and can't seem to find the hole. is the tensioner towards bottom or top? I am looking I juts dont see it. this is why I wanted a manual so bad today for the diagrams.

It is mounted to the same bracket that holds the ac compressor on, right next to the water pump. It has a small pulley, that is about 3 inch or so in diameter. The square hole is very near the small pulley. The tensioner has the smallest pulley on the engine.

Thanks to every one who helped especially Pete K. I ended up using the free tool rental at advanced auto parts to get slack on the belt. Alternator is working fine. Any sugestion on where to purchase a service manual?

Next project figure out why my fan never goes on.

Is this a new car for you?
Is so you should go thru and change ALL fluids including bleeding the breaks to get the old stuff out.
You will have to suck the fluid out of the rearend. Also add some GM limited slip modifier when you refill.
Don't forget to change the fuel filter also, mine looked like it was original when I changed it.

This car as been in my family since 1991, I have owned it for the last 5 years. This was my first repair I have ever done on my own besides replacing the MAF. I had my mechanic do the injectors and while he was at it he did a full tuneup (fuel filter was done).

I made the decision if I am going to keep this car for a long long time, I am going to have to start working on it myself.
