I have noticed when engine is running at or above 230 degrees (F) & after heavy accel(WOT) then slowing down or coming to a stop I smell a burnt clutch smell.I do not smell this if engine is under 200 degress(F) while under heavy accel(WOT).I'm assuming its my transmission fluid or clutches burning.Has anyone else noticed this with their c4?Will transmission cooler help & cause this smell to stop? Will a performance radiator cause transmission temps to be lower,or just coolant temps to be lower?I know in 1995 that automatics had temp of transmission added to "gauges".Is there a transmission cooler kit available that is easy to install & a specific location to install it.C4s don't have much airflow to radiator to begin with & in what location you guys recommend installing the exchanger? How do automatics hold up to track use?I know this is alot of questions & would like your guys opinion.Car is 1994 automatic. Thanks in advance.
A Dewitts radiator along with a chip or tune to activate your fans at lower temps. will significantly reduce your coolant temps. About 20~30 degrees. This will reduce your tranny fluid temps an equal amount as the tranny fluid is cooled through the radiator. My '89 auto dropped temps over 35 degrees when I did this!
Fluid is in excellent condition-was replaced about 10,000 miles ago.Car in general has been very well maintained.Wish I knew how to post pictures but I am very computer illiterate.I had my laptop now for only 3months.Have you or anyone else noticed this smell under heavy acceleration when engine is above 228 degrees (F)?I hope my transmission lasts for awhile because if it goes it will be time for upgrades(performance rebuild on engine, trans, diff.) & will be eating ramen for a VERY long time:
By the way fluid smells like fresh trans. fluid-no burnt smell.

Before you installed cooler did you notice "smell" under hard accel?
What's you car do in quarter-mile without NOS?
Nice upgrades
If your tranny fluid smells fine, it is not the tranny or clutches within the tranny burning up. Most likely you have a small oil leak on the headers that burns oil when the headers are hot (after a hard run) or something near the headers that is melting. If it were the tranny overheating, you fluid would smell horribly.

Don't know if this will help, but. When I began racing 01 in desert time trials .. High Temp. Everything over-heated .. I lost brakes, power steering, blew trannys. So put coolers on all. But also replaced Trans. with Mega Raptor 700R4 .. built for 700hp & Torque. My experience is my C4 ran way to hot. 230+, Possibly something to do with early pollution control .. Correct me if I am wrong. I now have the 420hp. Trick Flow Street Bracket kit. And if I remember correctly, the 160º theromostat or 180, but the car runs normally at 193º .. Coolers on most everything. Still a work in progress: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPa4RbAj_RE
