I second that, the windshield seal gave up.

I know your concern about the vin number plate.

When I bought my 85 it had a cracked windshield and my vin number plate was bad rusted, couldn't hardly read it. I got one of those outfits to come to the house and put a new windshield in. When he got it out I cleaned the vin plate. It cleaned up pretty nice and was readable. Sprayed some flat black on it and he put the new winshield in.

I'm sure you know what ya have to do. Go to one of the windshield specialists and see what they suggest to do. If they take it out in 1 piece (which they can) they can reseal and reset it.

If your windshield is all stone chipped and if you have the extra bucks go for a new one. My new one cost $190 five years ago.
