Have a few threads on gaskets but am wondering what are the best to use on my 1985. Ecklers have a set listed at $24 - has anyone used them? Do you install dry or with RTV? Have read posts where some put RTV on heads and not on valve cover, others have put RTV on valve covers and not heads, some RTV just on the bolts, still others have used rubber gaskets. Kind of at a loss here with all the different ways they say to install.
I installed a set and am having trouble on one side. If I were to do it over again, and I might have to, I would use a little something to coat the surface first. Maybe something like Hylomar.

You can also get them at Autozone or NAPA. Valve cover gaskets should never have silicone or any other gasket goop put on them. I use RTV on the china wall, the 4 corners of the block/main cap seam, and maybe a verythin skin on the intake side of the heads but only enough to hold the gaskets in place during assembly. My garage floor is dry.
So, one school is I don't have a problem so you won't.
It's up to you of course but my suggestion would in no way cause harm and might save you needing to redo the project. When that also means replacing the crimp ring, or risking a crack in the old egr tube, it is something to think about.
I always glue mine onto the valve cover with rtv. If I ever need to pop the covers off, the gasket can be reused because it stays on the valve cover and doesn't tear. Works for me.
