Default ZR1 wheel question

Posted this in the ZR1 section too:

I'm looking into buying new ZR1 style wheels for my 1996 LT4, and am planning on doing something a little different. Personally, I don't like how the AFS 11" wheels stick out past the fenders.
Instead of going with the typical AFS 9.5/11" wheel setup, I'd like to get 4 true GM ZR1 9.5" wheels, and send two off to be widenend 1" by a custom wheel shop. This would put the rear wheels at 10.5", so (in theory) they would'nt stick out past the fenders like the AFS 11" wheels do. I would keep the 255 tires up front, and the 285's in the rear. This would widen them up a bit of course.

My question is: The 9.5" GM ZR1 wheels have a different offset than the AFS 11" wheels. This taken into consideration, would they stick out past the fenders too?

This isn't exactly what you were after, but why not buy Grand Sport Rims and have them painted / powder coated for near the price of widening the ZR1 rims?

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I want to put the widest tires I can in the rear, while keeping it all under the fender well. Wheels with the GS offset stick out about a 1/4". That's a 1/4" too much for me. I dont want to have any protrusion of the wheel.

Here's the setup I was speaking of:
FRONT- GM ZR1 9.5" wheel/ 255 (maybe 275) width tires
REAR- GM ZR1 9.5" wheel widened to 10.5"/ 285 width.

I'm looking to find out if the rears will stick out. Thanks!

If you were to widen the stock 9.5" rim it would still have the same mounting point, therefore it would fit like a stock rim.

The ofset are different, but you can't compare ofset with the different width rim (the ofset is take from the center of the rim.)

Cool, I know what you mean about sticking out. It's a matter of personal preference, I guess, I just don't like it either...

btw- How much for widening a wheel? I have 17x9.5's on the rear and would love to put 315s out back without buying new rims...

The 9.5" will take a 285 as is - that's what my '96 has on as factory spec. I'd say that the 9.5" up fron would be a bit wide for a 255 tire as well.

About $200/wheel, but it's worth it to me. :)

Nope, 255's are designed for up to a 10" wheel.

Don't want to go the fender flare route.
I've really thought this out for a long time. The plan is to go with the GM ZR1 wheels. Just need to know if they will sit flush with the fender. Thanks though.

We did the widening for a club member recently, but the only tires we could get were 335. they stick out very slightly. 10.5" with 315 should sit roughly level with you wheel arch. :seeya

I have to disagree with you here. When you order the AFS style wheels, you have to specify that you have a standard 96 coupe. That way they will send you n 11" wheel with the correct offset. This will not stick out past the fender wells. i have them on mine as we speak. if you get the true ZR1 wheel, yes, they will stick out since they are designed for the ZR1 body panels.

I saw a 96 black coupe with 96 gran sport rims and 285/40's on the back. It looked good. The tires don't stick out. A 285 can be mounted on an 11'' rim.

The "correct" offset you speak of, is the Grand Sport offset (50mm). The GS offset does stick out past the fender wells 1/4-1/2", which is why GM used fender flares. I think if you take a close look at your wheels, you'll find this to be true. :)

This is what it looks like (thanks Mojo):

I thought collector editions had ZR1 stype wheels already??

My LT4 came with collector edition 9.5 in wheels. I have 285s and I just looked at 'em and they don't stick out at all...Actually IN about 1/2 in.

It looks like you have the same wheels as me.

The previous owner of my car ('89 Coupe) put 17" x 11" on it as well. From what he told me, he added modified hubs to make stock ZR-1 wheels work. I'd say the offset was different, but the bolt arrangement is DEEP inside the wheel. The bolt arrangement I see on standard coupes seems far shallower than what's on my car.

365ZUM, is the attachment point for your rear wheels deep behind the face of the wheels? The pic of your rear tires is identical to how mine appear from the rear. I'd like to determine if these are in fact ZR-1 wheels on modified hubs, or offset 50mm GS style wheels on standard hubs.

Why get the rear end narrowing kit made from early C4 parts. Several folks sell these so then the even the almost correct fit GS 11 rims would be inside the fender.

I have the GM factory ZR1 rims with 285s mounted on the back of my 95 convertable, I was also concerned about this problem. It is very hard to see them protruding at all from the fenderwell and I am very happy with the appearance. Good luck in your decision :chevy
