Reason: additional info
Classic VATS (Vechile Anti-Theft System) symptom. No exact answer can be given. Sometimes it's the key, sometimes the key cylinder wearing out, or a relay within the system. It's easier to trace this down if the car just quit starting all together, instead of intermitently. There are ways to bypass it for the time being. I've fixed mine about 3 times, and it's starting to do it again.
Could this be a bad ground or bad positive wire to starter or battery as well.
I also have another post asking the question about voltage dropping at idle I see it spike from 14.2 14.3 and down to 13.7 13.5 while in drive or reverse.
When this problem happens I notice the voltage is at 12.5 volts it stays there for a while and then starts right up after sitting and goes back to normal.

This is normal. Your idle speed in gear should be within spec. Your emissions label will specify. It's usually on the radiator shroud. Too low an idle can cause the alt to spin to slowly. If you start dipping into the 12's then you should start looking at the alternator and battery if idle is good. On most batteries, you can pop the top covers and check the fluid level inside. If low, add distilled water. Of course always check the cables are tight and clean.
