Default Timing Marker for New MSD Opti

Has anyone ever made a timing marker to go with their MSD Opti? If so, how did you do it & where did you mount it? (Pics anyone?)

The MSD has a fancy screw to change the initial timing. Guess he wants to try different settings or check the factory setting.

Duh, I forgot about that. When I put mine in I asked MSD about that and they really, really suggested leaving it alone. They said it was too easy to get way out of whack with it. Of course I asked why bother with putting it on there then? Because some people wanted it.

I think I'm going to convert to that new system from EFI Connection where they dump the opti and the LT computer and switch it over to an LSx computer and coil packs.

hi I was told by MSD you can only change timing after 3000 rpm, That computer handles everything before that.So if you wanted a marker it would have to be timing tape,a homemade pointer at T.D.C and you would have to find exact T.D.C. I think the only way to put timing tape on our cars is to buy a underdrive system, some of those use a new crank pulley that mounts where harmonic balancer goes stock and then balancer gets bolted on top of that. Since you don't run belt around balancer anymore you could put timing tape around it instead. You'd then have to run it to 3000 rpm check timing then add a degree of timing at a time testing for spark knock after raising it each time. I wouldn't be afraid of adding a degree or two of timing to it with testing. If you were racing I'm sure you could make more power this way. Good Luck Tim

Most people that have tried to mess with the timing screw say it does not work correctly.

I've seen that timing screw on the MSD. How easy is it to even access once you've buttoned the whole install up?

Pretty easy with a long screwdriver.

Default msd

With the timing cover off bring the engine to tdc.Replace the cover
Put the tape on the damper. make you a pointer. However I was told by msd to bring the rpm's to 3000.Adjust the screw to add advance. However the computer will look at it and might take the out advance at wot.I left it alone

I really don't understand what the reasoning for that screw is anyway. You can make far better timing adjustments in the tune.

You can find tdc without taking the timing cover off and the computer will only take timing away below 3000 rpm.You can make no timing adjustments stock anyway[except using something like tunnercat etc.]. This is to give more horse power by adding more total timing above 3000 rpm. It is not something most streetcars would need but it would make more horse power in a race car maybe quite a lot if you try different fuels.

Wouldn't a good scanner tell you what the timing is anyway?
