Reading the latest Corvette Magazine this afternoon. Tech Nerd was asked what kind of oil to use in an 84. His reply was : What GM recommended, Mobile 1." I think he missed this one.
I missed it too. What are we supposed to say; "Rip that junk CFI off and get a carb on there!" (?)
Huh??? Tech Nerd said the 1984 owners manual recommended Mobile 1. I don't think so. Mobile 1 recommendation did not come to pass until the later C4's without the oil cooler. Clear enough?????
I noticed that in the mag too. I am sure the tech nerd will correct him/he self next issue. I believe 5w-30 was reccomended. could be wrong. I dont feel like going out to my garage and lifting the hood to look. I love my crossfire!!!
Remember guys, that the oil manufacturers have removed the zinc and phosphorus from the oil blends because the EPA says those elements get into the catalytic converters, and causes them to be ineffective when that oil cokes up in there. The Nerd was steering you towards a sc oil that would protect your cam. The lack of the high pressure lubricating agents in the oil will reduce the life expectancy of your cam and lifters because the parts will have exaggerated wear.
Use a diesel oil, or Mobil one, or some other synthetic that has the sc ratng. The rating can be found on the label of the oil in the circle logo .

Good point...
Every oil change I add in EOS lube for extra protection.
I don't worry about the cat since mine is gone and have a test pipe in place of it.
Was mobil 1 even made in 84?
What did the manual recommend for oil?
It was introduced in the 70's, maybe early(?) 70's. Caused quite the debate back then about if you should use it on a "fresh" motor. A major question was would it allow the rings to seat properly, was it too slippery and would it stay in the bearing spaces after shut down, it's too runny and will leak out of all the seals...I remember how many people were very wary of this "new" oil. Man does all that seem too funny today?

Be very careful believing what you see in any magazine. They are great for entertainment, but questionable for tech content. The writers have ferocious deadlines to meet every month, and there's very little double-check on technical accuracy. Their main objective is to sell advertising!
