I have a 96 LT-4 with 37000 miles on it. When it is cold out in the mornings it is almost impossible to get into gear especially reverse. If it is warm it is no problem. Is this normal?
Have you tried putting it in gear without the engine running? If it's clutch related, it should be much easier to get in gear with the engine off. I know when my slave cylinder started leaking it was hard to get in gear when it was low on fluid.
If the clutch fluid is full you might want to have the trans fluid changed are you the original owner? If not I would change the fluid anyway it's just good matinance the fluid you need is #12345349 synchromesh transmission fluid.
Not sure but I'm having a similar problem with my '91 L98 Coupe. Only 33K miles but, when the car has been driven warm, clutch throw gets "rough". Like some obstruction. Not present when car is cold & clutch grabs well & smooth. I think I'll have the clutch hydraulic system drained & checked. Sounds more like that than a throw out bearing. John [IMG][/IMG]
Sometimes when the tranny is cold I can't get reverse on the first try. What works for me is to put it in 1st gear first and then go for reverse, just a thought
I have similar problems in the morning when my car has been sittin around all night and it's cold out, but once my tranny warms up my shifts r smooth as butter...if ur's r too then I wouldn't worry bout it at all, just a vette thing...plus mine only has 30K on it currently and Corvettes of Dallas(who r the best in my opinion) have drivin and checked every thing on my vette and said it was perfect outside of my damn antenna not going all da way down. :mad
My 96 LT4 has a similar glitch, but I just put it in first, ease the clutch out a bit and then it slides into reverse pretty easily. One idea...put it in reverse when you park.
As for the advise on changing the transmission fluid, If you do it, please let us all know (in this string) if it did the trick! I for one, would change mine today if that cured this minor irritant.
Cire96 :yesnod:
Both are/were low mile cars. Both have issues going into reverse sometimes, so I do the 1st ---> Reverse method others have mentioned.
Also, sometimes it doesn't go all the way in reverse, but I'm smart enough to feel when that is going to happen.
I am going to have a trans fluid drain/replace, and a clutch fluid drain/replace/bleed this spring on the GS. Same with power steering.
Why?
On my black LT4, I replaced the power steering fluid with synthetic, and the mild groaning from the power stearing pump went away. And the clutch and trans work at only 20k miles made a HUGE difference!!!
