Default Loud lifter

My friend believes it is a lifter making the noise. If it is a loud lifter is it safe to drive or what should i do? if i replace them what else should i do at the same time?

thanks.

If it is valvetrain noise, you better not drive it much. You risk a chance of dropping a valve which could destroy your engine. It might be just a rocker arm out of adjustment. Pull the valve covers and check the valve lash. Do a search.

Check the lifter preload, not valve lash. Valve lash is for mechanical cams.

A lifter, also many times referred to as a tappet, is a small device, maybe a couple of inches long that creates a mechanical connection between the camshaft and the pushrods of an engine. One end of the lifter rides on the camshaft lobe and moves up and down while the other end provides a cup for then pushrod to ride in allowing the pushrod to move up and down too.

It's part of the valvetrain system that converts the rotational movement of the camshaft into the up and down movement of the valve. Camshaft, pushrod, rocker arm, valve/valve spring, valve spring retainer, valve locks, valve spring shims, etc.

There are basically five different types of lifters: hydraulic flat tappet, mechanical flat tappet, hydraulic roller, mechanical roller and mushroom. Our V8 engines have a total of 16 lifters, one for each of the 16 valves.

It would be a good idea for you to pick up a basic automotive manual at one of the auto parts stores, like AutoZone, which can better explain about all these parts, tell what they do and even have photos.

Pulling the valve covers can allow you to barely see the lifters, since they're buried deep inside what we refer to as the lifter valley. Looking through holes in the cylinder heads with the valve covers off will only allow you to see the top portions of the lifters.

If the adjustment has backed off, then he has lash, but you're correct.
