Can't open rear hatch!
I have an 88 Vette and the rear glass won't open when the buttons are pushed. There is a click in the rear latch but is more quiet than normal. There is no emergency cable to pull. The bad part is, the car has a full roll cage so there is no way to crawl to the back.
Any ideas?

There is an emergency cable to pull - it's light aircraft cable and tucked under the carpet ahead of the latch. Dig around ...

There is no cable. It was removed along with hundreds of items to reduce weight a long time ago.

That's what I would suggest. Push down on the hatch while another person hits the switch. Might free up the mechanism.

If that doesn't work, smash the rear hatch and now you can go with a lighter lexan piece.

OK, you said that and I didn't believe you - sorry. You said the solenoid is not as loud; check that the battery is fully charged and maybe start the engine to bring the system voltage up to full voltage.

I'm guessing your gonna crawl back there and pop the solenoid with a screwdriver.
I'm also guessing that the plastic trim was removed as one of those hunerd parts.

Let someone push and hold down the release button while you push down the hatch slowly...

I tried to push on the glass, I have tried everything mentioned so far. It does have the plastic trim on the top but if you look straight back you can see the solenoid but can't reach it.

Time to remove that extra weight.
Or get a long screwdriver.
Without that pull cord, your blue, screwed & tatooed!

Maybe a long screwdriver to manually release the hatch?
When you get it open put a new emergency cord on - it weighs what 5 oz??

use a long extension with a 10 mm. socket to remove the solonoid, use the long screw driver to release the hatch, its not as hard as it sounds. cut the back half of the solonoid off , pull the guts out, go to pepboys and buy a universal electric door lock actuator for 12 dollars, leave the boot on it and insert it in where the old guts were, the rubber boot will keep it in because its very tight , put a screw in the actuator eye to move the lever, the 10mm screw that held the original still works, hook up electric, did this today, works perfect.

You took out a small nearly weightless cable to save weight, but left the trim pieces, wires, and heavy (by comparison) solenoid?
Without that cable, you're in for some innovation. Best of luck.
