Default 4+3 transmissions

I'm looking to buy probably an 85 corvette, and I really want a manual transmission, yet I hear it has problems. What exactly goes wrong, and could it be cheaply modified to be ok?

There were were a few internal changes made to the units that were finalized by the 87 and 88 units. The best thing to do is just change the fluid and filter in the OD unit every 12k miles. :)

Nothing goes wrong, if they were properly maintained. Remember, you are getting a 17 year old car, and who knows if the previous owners changed the fluid when they were supposed to. As far as modifing it cheaply goes...its a Corvette, nothing is cheap :D

You would need to find out if it has been updated if not you have an overhaul in the future, only a matter of time. An 86 would be a better choise as for 4+3. There were two big changes made in the 4+3 that make a big differrence in durability of the 4+3, direct thrust washer and carrier bearing which was fased in during 85 but I have no data as to when so it's a luck of the die, unless it was rebuilt at one time then chances are it has been updated.
