I have a 1985 4 speed car with 56,000 miles. I'm looking for some information from you guys as to where my problem lies. Of course the car has the switch on the console to switch on the overdrive. I can switch it on but the car doesn't go into overdrive. When the switch is on the indicator light comes on and when I decellerate the drivetrain is free as it should be. In other words it seems the overdrive is working during decelleration but is not working while cruising down the highway. Any ideas??? Thanks in advance... Randall

The fact the light comes on shows the computer is "trying " to engage the O/d.
The fact it doesn't engage could be for many reasons. The O/d relay may be faulty , the wiring to relay then to trans may be broken or faulty or as has been in some cases the wire is not even connected to the trans
From some very old archives "If the light comes on and the unit freewheels that means the overdrive is burned up. This is a common symptom. The clutches for the overdrive are slipping so it reverts to a direct mode with a freewheel condition since the sprag in the unit is not locked."
