Default My LT4.........fluke?

I recently bought this car, and all pieces fit together verifying it was an LT4. The VIN, it's a 96 with a ZF, the RPO sheet, intake P# is correct, etc. I got it home, pulled the valve cover, and found this:

I know GM has done some funny things on the assembly line in the past, but the fact that this car has LT1 heads (I'm surmising LT1 long block as well) is a stretch in my book. Carfax is clean, and it looks like the motor has been in there for a while, so I don't know what to think at this point. I contacted the previous owner and he is more angry than I, since he paid a premium amount for the car in 2006 with 56K on it, and in perfect running condition.

Let the speculation begin.

Are you sure the heads are LT1's, or just the rockers?

P# on the head is 10207848, and 6109 is the larger marking. The lip for the valve cover isn't correct for the LT4 either. Springs don't look to be oval coil material.

I've searched the internet and found little to nothing on the P#.

if you have the valve covers off it should say LT4 somewhere towards the front of the head.

The part numbers are hard to read on the heads. It looks like you have the 10207643 LT1 heads. I'm guessing the rest of the engine (minus the intake) is an LT1.

You can always strap it to a dyno to verify...

I don't have any doubt it was (supposed to be) an LT4 car originally. It definitely sounds like it has an LT4 cam, which also leads me to believe that it's got an LT1 long block......if I recall correctly those don't usually come with cams? Not sure when I'll be able to tear it all the way down and verify exactly what I've got.

Neither the LT1 nor LT4 came from the factory with a noticeable cam lope. Yours must have an aftermarket camshaft, possible the LT4 Hot Cam.

It's not enough for that, but I can definitely hear something going on through the Borlas.

Isn't the VIN stamp on the engine fairly easy to see? Or is that not the case on LTx motors? Mine is pretty easy to read if you get under the car.

Default missing rollers

Kirk, sure hope that you find your block and internals are the the real deal. I like my LT4 Corvette so much that I have resisted buying a newer Corvette for almost 14 years.

well, it is easy to assume the motor has had problems, or good parts taken off.
I hope you did not pay lt4 price.
I would not care how pissed the PO acted, I would say " I would be pissed to because you sold me an lt1." I would get some money back or take t back, if you paid a good price.

If you wanted an lt1 you could have paid a low price for more mods and power.

I only paid $5,500 for the car (here's a little more description on it: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/intr...ansas-lt4.html), so I'm not too worried about it. I'm mainly glad the intake is correct, and the injectors and ECU are likely as well. I wasn't planning on leaving it relatively stock. Now you guys have me curious about the cam.....I'll have to see if I can fit I dial indicator on there and roll the motor over by hand.

I'm focusing most of my efforts on cleaning up other projects right now, but hope to tear this unit down before the new year arrives. Thanks for all the input!

sounds like he possibly sold the top end of the motor when it was fetching a good deal of money.

Perhaps this can be a lesson for all those looking to buy LT4 Cars. When my friend bought his I removed the oil filler to check the rockers.

If the heads are incorrect, the intake is incorrect.

Even though the intake part number is correct (see opening post), the manifold is incorrect?
