Default Forged 396 Assembly, What do you think?

Basically this is the what VA Speed is wanting to build for me. What do you think?

Eagle 4340 crank 3.875 stroke
Compstar rods 6 inch
Mahle pistons
Rings
Bearings
Cam bearings
ARP main studs
Custom Comp Cam

Im gunning for or want about 550 at the crank. Anyone have similar build? I will search the thread to see but post if you got something in the 396 area. Tell me what you wish you did or didnt do with your build?

i have a forged eagle crank, CAT h beam 5.7 rods and KB forged pistons and i am putting out 450+rwhp. all of the parts were from a motor i had build 10 years ago for my camaro but never got to use. so i put it in an LT1 block and bought some heads. don't you have LE heads? why not get another LE cam?

Yes I have LE2 heads right now. Im going to get them flow test at the shop and reuse these heads. I believe Lloyd said they flow 286@.600. I called him and he said by sending it to him and making it a LE3 I would pick up 10hp or so. The benefit doesnt outweigh the cost. But I will keep my eye open for some AFR ported heads in future. Maybe next season.

I also do have a LE2 Cam. 226/236 525/525 111lsa I believe. But the builder said that Im getting a custom Comp Cam. Does that mean off the self custom or custom grind to my specs? That Im not sure of. If it comes down to it I may just get a LE3 type cam.

Pr0zac- That is right about where I wanna be maybe more if I can get more and still maintain decent streetablity. How does your setup feel? You like it? Any regrets? Idle quality? Hows your rear and tranny holding up(stock?)

Review my thread regarding my 383 build. Near stock idle / driveability, 24mpg on the highway, ~430 - 450hp at the wheels on a Dynojet dyno(measured 411 using a Mustang Dyno). Another good thread to review is that of BlackHarleyMan. It's a sticky. 396 build would be similar.

Be sure to have the crank checked. Mine was tapered. TJ Wong had this same issue with two LS7 Eagle cranks as well. I turned mine in the interest of time. TJ returned them to Eagle and his customer ultimately bought a Callies IIRC.

my car has been on the back burner for quite some time now but when i did drive it i was impressed with its power.. it was similar to my cammed lt4 on the spray. i have a 6 speed and its stock and an EM gladiator 44 with 4.10 gears. the nitrous was eating through posi units with street tires so i don't know how this will hold up. i never got to drive it with a spot on tune so i don't know how it would react normally but it had a bit of cam surge while trying to go slow in first gear. i know if it were an auto you would have never felt any of it. but i don't mind it being a little unruly as long as it performs. i haven't really had a chance to run it full out at the track or street in its current form, but i will be hitting the track next season as soon as it opens. at times i wish i went with a supercharger but that would have been way more money and i haven't had a chance to use the nitrous on the new engine.

Sounds good... I dont mind to sacrific alittle but I just want it to be maintainable on the street. I have the stock dana36 with 307 looks like I need to upgrade. Its on the list.

Supercharger is alot more plug and play but I wanted to go N/A. Now on my dads vette we may do that route.

Because I have seen the Eagle machining problems first hand, might I suggest the Callies budget forged crank?
Much nicer piece, and not alot more money.

Are we talking about the compstar or the dragonslayer crankshaft? If you can give me a part number that would be great. Thanks

compstar is the crank I'd choose. I was always a fan of eagle over scat, but I've never had first hand experience with either.

However, with TJ's suggestion and the issues he's had with these eagle cranks (machining tolerances are not what they use to be i guess), i'd go with compstar (callies) hardware.

I don't have a part number handy, but it was the Callies Compstar, 1 pc seal, and used a 5.85 rod. I used that crank in Beppe's 396 (Conv90), and he has been running it hard for a few years.

that setup is almost exactly 550 crank. i know you arent using AFR heads but the cam may not be a bad choice. i would love to see someone replicate this setup with possibly bigger injectors(42s), TB(monoblade), advanced induction ported edelbrock LT4 intake and a set of exotic muscle 1 7/8" headers. i think that would put you very near 600fwhp with great street manners.
