Guys, clarify this for me. I have 2.59 gears in my car. If I wanted to go with 3.07 gears (GM) , do I need to change the carrier ? and if so, what would a carrier cost me ?
I know Richmond Gears sells the 3.54 kit for the vette which utilizes the existing carrier.
No, you don't need a new carrier. A set of 3.07's will fit into your Dana36. I do suggest you go higher than 3.07's though. 3.54's or 3.73's will make a real difference. If you go for a new carrier (Dana 44), then you're looking at a lot more bucks and other modifications (new driveshaft and torque arm).
For a street car I would go with the 3.54 over the 3.73's in an auto, I love the 3.73's for autos at the track, but they cruise a little high on the highway in my opinion. Both of these would fit in your D36.

If you are wanting to go to a 3.07 from a 2.59 you will have to change the carrier. The carrier for the 2.59 (2 series) has a different spacing then the 3.07 (3 series). Aftermarket gear manufactures make ring and pinion sets in 3.54, 3.73 ratios to fit both the 2 series and 3 series carriers but I have never seen a 3.07 after market gear. If 3.07 is what you want then I suggest you find a rebuilder who will exchange yours (the complete dana 36 diff.) for one with a 3.07.

Doh, ok. I was wrong on that. Sorry. Just go with the 3.54's!!!
Wait, if a 3.07 gear isn't compatible with 3.54 and 3.73 ... then why is it I've always been told I can upgrade to a 3.54 and 3.73 from my 3.07's??
Why rebuild? ~~~ I have a 3.07 with carrier that I am considering selling. My setup has ~ 30K miles on it. If interested ~ send me an e-mail.

Glock, They make aftermarket 3.54 3.73 to fit a 2 series or 3 series carrier. You specify which one you have when you order the ring and pinion set. The factory gear has a different spacing on a 2 series compared to a 3 series carrier. Since no one makes a aftermarket 3.07 and assuming that was the gear you want, then you would have to use a 3 series carrier with a 3.07 gear
