Anyway I baught a 84 Vette from a guy that knew very little about the car..... Anyway I can tell the engine is new or at least it has all new gaskets. The spedo says 135k its spotless!!! So here is my problem...
When at a idle in nuetral its got a rough idle. When you put it in gear it seems like its going to die. But any amount of gas you give it above the set idle it takes with great response. ??? Where do I look for the problem? Fuel ? Vacumme?
Also another thing it does is when under a load I hear a rocker arm rattle. As if the timing is advanced to much.
Has anyone ever seen this problem ? and if so can you tell me where to start?
^^Many will tell you other things, but I use mid grade or premium gas and that stops the valve clatter.....others will tell you different....and I forget what they say.
The low idle, Since you don't know the shape of the car 100%, I'd go and get a new O2 sensor asap and pop that baby in.
Since you are new to the car....you can see that sensor if you follow your drivers side exhaust downward...you'll be able to see it attached to the exhaust portion.
If you don't already have one.....just breakdown and buy a nice floor jack at Harbor Freight....these cars are so low, you have to jack it up for.....everything (it seems)
Since it is a new car to you and you don't know its maintenance history, start with a tune up: plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, 02 sensor, fuel filter. Then check the tps sensor setting, possibly synchronize the throttle bodies, timing, and most likely your problem will be resolved. Change the engine and tranny oil and filters too.
Does it have the stock camshaft in it? Performance cams( aftermarket) can cause "loping" which to some guys feels and sounds like a rough running engine. It's normal with them though.
