Default Trans Leak

Hi All,

Got a small leak in my 84 with automatic. Looks like its at the shift linkage where it goes into trans. Is there a gasket that needs to be replaced or would a can of stop leak work?

Any info/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

There is a metal clad seal in there.
KD and others make a tool that removes and re-installs the seal without much effort. $30 or so for the tool, $5 for the seal.

Thanks for the help.

Not familiar with KD. Does this require removing fluid from the trans?

Hey twotone, does it leak all the time? I got an 84 auto also and it only leaks when I leave it sit. If you use it everday or every other day it does not leak at all. Mine I could not find so maybe thats where its leaking from.

It seems to leak when it's parked overnight.

I tightened and cleaned the pan. Over the weekend I noticed a couple of drops on the floor and at the shift linkage.

I drive it a couple of times a week during spring and summer months.

Hope this helps!

I have a 84 as well. I took mine to the shop. We put it up on the lift and the first place that my mechanic went to was the shift linkage. It was wet but it was not leaking. Turns out it is my tansmission pump. It is leaking a little and when it runs down the wind from driving the car sends the fluid back towards the linkage. It will be going into the shop soon for a rebuild. They can fix the leak for $400 or rebuild for $800. As old as the car is and 84K on the OD I am going to spend the $800 to get it rebuilt. I just bought it in September and my wife and enjoy driving it so for my peace of mind I am going to get it rebuilt.

Thanks for the info about your trans pump.

I wiped down the area arount the inkage and don't plan to drive it for a while so the wind will not be a factor. I'll try to pinopoint the leak and post it.

KD Item #2393. Go to kd-tools.com
I'm having the same problem, but I believe its the shift linkage shaft itself that is pitted allowing it to leak.

Jon,

Thanks for the KD info.

After letting the car sit for a week, I see that the leak is coming from the shaft or seal.

Do you have a source to order the shaft and tool?

The shaft is available from the dealer, part #24210712. It should come with the seal.
The tool I dont know. Last time I had my seal changed, my mechanic just dropped the pan to do it. However it was at that time that we both noticed the shaft was kind of rough and pitted. Come spring, both the shaft and seal are going to be replace.

Oh,BTW. Thanks to Pete K for the part# for the shift shaft. I previously posted a thread about my seal leaking and he gave me the info.

Any special tools needed to replace the shift shaft?

Thanks
