Default Time(ing) for a change

The vehicle: 1994 LT1 automatic trans coupe with 148,000 on the clock, no mods, just stock. Nothings broken, it’s just time to think about a new timing chain. I’ll be doing the swap myself. So my fellow gear heads and brothers in grease, tell me what you know and what chain set I should go with and any pit falls I should avoid.

Thanks!

a stock replacement mellings, cloyes or gm will be fine. all are good. i think that the mellings will be the least expensive.

Read your FSM very carefully. There are a lot of ways to do this job wrong none of which give good results.

Nope-I'm happy with what I have
It will be just a timing chain swap and engine clean up, maybe a new idler arm pully and belt too

Cloyes C3039 is what I'm going with. I'll also replace the idler pulley while I'm at the front of the motor

While 'you are there' can really wound your wallet..LOL..
I started with it would be nice to get a little more power and found a great buy on a set of heads.. No problem yet then the TPI will not bolt up to it well after some research end up in a group buy for a First, then realize the heads have raised exhaust ports with a LT1 style port so manifolds won't fit and LT1 manifolds I am told have a different pattern on flange than L98 Y pipe so now headers but only low cost ones are Hookers that fit a 91 chassis and LT1 heads at the same time. Finally it would be a shame to get in that deep and not change the cam and while you are there the timing chain etc.. all for what was going to be a 30-50 hp buff up LOL..
