What is the correct procedure for removing the drivers side cooling fan? I have removed the four screws holding the fan but it will not come out the top or bottom. What else has to be removed?
I removed and replaced the passenger side fan on my 95 this past summer. The fan will only come out from the underside. In order to accomplish this you must unbolt the "skid bar" This has two bolts in the front that unbolt from underneath and the 1 bolt in the rear that bolts the rear of the skid bar to the front of the frame rail itself. This bolt is taken out from the side and will require a socket on the bolt head and a wrench on the nut.
This is illustrated for you in the FSM on page 10-5-13
Once the bolts are removed use a rubber mallet to "knock" the skid bar loose from the top. The fan will slide right out from underneath and the new one goes back in from underneath.
Make darn sure that your car is up on 4 jack stands before you get underneath the car to do this work
I'm sorry I lead you astray. I went back and checked the FSM and removing the driver's side fan is a cast iron bitch. Per page 6B-22 you must:
Remove the radiator upper support
Remove the skid bar as I previously described
remove the lower right fan from the bottom
then remove the entire fan shroud from above with the left fan still bolted in
and only then can you remove the left fan
You're right that cross bar makes it a real pia ..... sorry for the bad directions the first time round:o
Guess I lucked out only having to replace the lower right side one.
I had my right radiator fan go out, changed it and then a week later, my left one went out. The FSM says I've got to drain the radiator, unclamp the hoses, disconnect the air conditioner canister mount... blah blah. Bigger job than it should be. I think that when they engineer a car, the engineers should have to do a tear down.
