I've got the GM1 Dana 36 with 2.59's. I want to get the replacement 3.54's for it. My question is, should I buy the rebuild kit and replace everything or would it be ok to just replace the gears? How difficult is it to replace these gears?

Whats the difference in price between the 2? I would think it depends on the condition of the internals and/or the milage on them. Although IMHO, if you are going to put performance gears in a Dana 36 I would highly recommend that the entire diff be disassembled and at least thoroughly checked. May cost a few more labor bucks but I would think its worth it... :)
(edit) Whoops... my bad. I didn't see the milage on your baby until I reread my response. I would have the entire diff gone through with 149k miles on it if you are going to upgrade gears...

I replaced all of my bearings and seals when I put in my 3.73 eventhough I only had 57000 mi in the car. I never wanted to take the chance of a leak or stuck bearing. I would have a professional install them other than try and tackle the project yourself. If you do not set up the pinion depth and backlash correctly not only will you have serious gear whine but the thing is liable to come apart like a hand granade the first time you get on it so spend the extra money and have it done professionally. Also if they screw it up they fix it not you! :hat
