Default Camshaft Lifter Spider Install - Help

All,

I'm normally on the C-3 forum. This is a Dart Block with factory lifter/dogbone/spider arrangement. I have a C-4 Chiltons but it skips over the spider install. Questions: Is there a front/back orientation to worry about with the spider? What do you recommend for the retainer bolt threads (only 3 on the Dart Block) and what is the retainer bolt torque?

Front/back orientation looked the same. at this point I've got spider seated on block bosses, plain washers then bolts. I've alinged it to keep the spider legs centered on the dogbones and the dogbones centered on the respective lifters. Missing anything?

Thanks,
Rob

I installed mine about a year ago....first time I have ever used this "thing". There were only three bolts to hold it in place. I torqued them down to about 10 pounds and used Loktite Blue on the threads. Didn't want the bolts coming loose and getting into the engine.

I think you are good on the rest. Don't believe there is a front/back on the spider.

Good luck on your project.

I've done two engines with the spider and I did them just like John A. Marker did. I didn't even notice any tang so if it's facing forward on either one it's just dumb luck. I don't think it makes a bit of difference

FSM calls for 18 ft/lbs; I marked mine with a Magic Marker, arrow shape pointing forward before removing the spider. 96 has three bolts.

Thank again,

Prior to your post, I torqued mine to 20 ft/lb based on a mid-range value for lubed/non-lubed grade 7 5/16" hardware. Also used blue loctite.

There is a half moon shaped notch in one end of the spider. That notch goes to the back. I was told the purpose of the notch is to focus oil run off from the spider at that particular point, but who really knows.

Acceleration will do the same thing.

BLUFF since the GMPP box did not mention and the FSM didn't call anything out....I never really worried about orientation.

However, his thread had me pondering if there is a difference. So I've been perusing* section 6A1B (5.7 Liter V8 Engine Unit Repair RPO LT1-VIN P) of the FSM and I don't see orientation mentioned during the

"VALVE LIFTER ASSEMBLIES install or connect section just install or connect
Valve lifter guides (35), retainer (33), and valve lifter guide retainer bolts/screw (32).

Tighten
Valve lifter guide retainer bolts/screws (32) to 25 N. m (18 lb. ft.).
"
Figure 15 is pretty vague too. So I went out to my spares box and pulled out an old retainer and while there is a tang on one side and a cut out on the other ....both are small enough that in my opinion they will have no difference in oil flow in the turbulent maelstrom that occurs in the crankcase of a running engine.

So if someone has something definitive please post it.

On quick R and Rs I've installed them the way they came out...##I even marked the location and orientation of my half shafts But on my 355 build the block went to the machinist and all new lifter/components were installed (GMPP kit) . So far it has survived////

*perusal has two meanings that seem to be opposite....my meaning was" to look over or through in a casual or cursory manner"

All I can add is what I sam in a crate GM Lt4 that had the bag pulled up, the notch was facing forward from GM, the engine was still in the crate.

I will agree that it can not serve much of a purpose.
