Default 4+3 to ZF6 conversion, again...

So I have this great running 88 Z51 vette with the 4+3, and its' starting to go, so I bought an 89 ZF6 and bellhousing and I'm getting all the parts together to hit this project hard... but I've got some questions I couldn't answer looking at previous threads, maybe someone can help.

1) What is the purpose of the dual mass flywheel with the ZF6, and could I just hang a pressure plate and disc on my 4+3 flywheel that will work with the ZF6? If so, what clutch parts would work? Do I really need the dual mass on the ZF?

2) I'm told that a standard Turbo 400 yoke will work with the ZF and my stock drive shaft, is this true?

3) What about the CAGS on the ZF? Do I have to do anything with this? I'm pretty sure from past posts that the speedo will plug right in.

4) Does anyone know if it is true that my stock starter will work with the 89 bellhousing? I think this is the case, but would like to verify.

Mooncricket?

I'm interested in how this works out for you. When you're all done, can you post findings/results?

Thanks

I just finished (literally still got the grease under my nails) installing a zf in my 85 that had the 4+3 .I purchased a conversion kit from TPIS for $250 which included a Ram clutch with a new pivot ball and was able to use my existing flywheel . you will need to cut out the old shifter and you will need a zf yoke for your shaft the beam and everything bolted right up the entire swap took me aprox 10 hrs over a two day period doing all the work alone. you will also need the master and slave cylinder as the hose from your old one will not work on the new slave . i have more info on my pc at home i would be glad to send you if you want ... also if you are going with the after market shifter this is the time to do it while the tranny is out i used a B&M Ripper and so far love it car is still on jacks so i have not had a chance to drive the car yet .From what i understand and have read the dual cuts down on the noise at idle and when the clutch pedal is in . which i assume would only be at a stop. hope this helps Von  good luck

Vonstarr,
Definitely, if you have any more info, please pass it on. I don't mind the noise, I was hoping that I could use my stock flywheel. Can you give me the contact info for TPIS?????

Sounds like the deal for me. I scored the whole master/hose/slave and bellhousing from the same 89 as the trans. I'm planning to do this real quick and clean.

Anybody out there have the ZF6 yoke they want to let go???? Sounds like that turbo 400 stuff the guy was selling me was because he didn't want to take apart his driveshaft. One minute he has it, next minute he doesn't.

I'm driving my super clean low mileage 92 LT1 everyday now, and to tell you the truth, I can't wait to get back into the noisy ole L98...

Vonstarr,
One other thing, I'm thinking of the new Hurst shifter, sounds like good things were posted about it here. Anybody know where to get the best price???

Yea I just did it on an 85 and an 86 which were both automatic cars. You will also have to have a starter. I forgot what year your car is, but with the ZF bell housing you have to have a mini starter with no end bell on it. There is only enough room for the starter gear to go between the flywheel and bell housing. I used and LT-1 clutch on my setup with a Centerforce flywheel.

What year were the bellhousings you used for the conversions you did? I am using an 89'. The 89' has a hump for this, I'm pretty sure my starter will work with this bellhousing. AC Delco lists the same starter from 88'-91'. I think I'm kool with mine.

My bell housing was an 90. Interesting, it could have saved my some serious sweating. The 85 has a 406 that only has staggered holes for the starter. I had to have a expensive CSI starter so that I could get it too work. If I knew the 89 had a hump I could have just bought a Z28 starter from a wrecking yard for about 30 bucks. Oh yea something else, I had to have an ZF clutch pedal, the one I had gotten first came from an 85 4+3 and the shaft the mastercylinder hooks onto is too big around. The ZF clutch pedal had a much smaller diameter rod for it.

Make sure you look at the size of the hump, because the 90 had one also, but it is only big enough to clear the starter gear. The 88 had the small starter with no bell.

Getting interesting. My hunch is that the 88 starter will work with the 89 bellhousing. I also have the ZF pedal and bracket from under the dash coming. The guy pulled everything out of the 89'. I also have a lathe, so I'll make it work. I also have a mill, and I aint shy about sticking that bellhousing on the table and making a little clearance if the starter don't work. I have a nice collection of large cutters.

This car is for drag racing to and from work, and boy is it going to be fun with that sixer.
