Default EGR Valve Question

While crusing my 90 Vette on the highway or sometimes around town, I get a code 32 with the Service Engine Soon light. My exhaust was changed from a L98 setup to a LT1 setup. It seems that the reduced back pressure causes the EGR valve not to function properly.

David Fulcher pulled a EGR valve from a 89 Vette and installed it on his 90 Vette. It seems to have fixed his Vette. I was going to order the 86-89 EGR valve, but it seems to be the same part number as the 90 now. It way different at one time.

The 1992 Parts Manual had these part numbers for the EGR valve:
86-89 EGR Valve Part Number: 17-11-16-65
90-91 EGR Valve Part Number: 17-11-22-40

In 1997, both part numbers were changed to: 17-11-34-56.
So now the EGR valve part number is the same for 86-91.

The question is should I buy the new part number (17-11-34-56) for $42 and see if it fixes the problem? I'm not sure what the differences were between the original two part numbers.

I'm not sure if anyone can answer this questions, but I figured it was worth a shot! :)

<<But I still don't like staring at that Service Engine light when I'm cruising on the interstate...>>

I don't like it either! Even though it doesn't hurt the car, it gives me this feeling it's not working right. My passengers won't be impressed either! :D

I have a 1990 vert. With the LT1 exaust sys. I had a bad EGR, replaced the valve only for that year specific, no codes. Seems to be working fine. By the way no cats.

It is possible I just have a bad EGR valve and replacing it might just fix the problem?

I have the same problem on my 86. Only thing that bothers me is the SES light create enopugh heat to slightly warp the plastic on the info console.

I was getting the dreaded code 32 if I was on the highway for any length of time and after two EGR temp switches, I pulled the EGR valve and the thing is flat carboned, sealed shut. Would take a small explosive charge to open it. The new one that I have should fix that problem.

If you haven't already, check the archived topics for "I beat the EGR CODE 32" from me. I did alot of research at the time on my 86, both with a local Chevy technician and through books. This thread will explain the system. By the way, I removed the pipe going over the valve cover too. I haven't had a code 32 since. Also, I do have a custom chip that I never used that will bypass the ECM checking for those readings. It's for an 86, I will sell it for cost if anyone really wants it.
