I have a '96 LT-4 with 71k on it.I've noticed what sounds like a ticking lifter but cant identify. I have the covers off and even with running still cant isolate. Its been doing this for some time just now tring to trouble shoot.
-Is this normal with the roller rockers after some miles?
-Are there some rockers/lifers that are prone to make noise?
Since LT4s are net build, with no preload adjustability, it should be pretty easy to find one that's looser than the others if they're checked one at a time. As already stated each should be checked with its lifter riding on the base circle of its cam lobe.
Once there you can use your hand to try to move the pushrod up and down. Check each rod for straightness while you're at it and for a broken valve spring.
Check everything up top first BEFORE deciding to tear into the engine to check the lifters.
The LT4's really come with a non adjustable valvetrain. If you change the studs, you can make it adjustable. I would go 1/2 to 3/4 turns past zero lash. A 3/8 stud will keep all your existing rockers in place. 3/8" stud with 7/16" on the bottom where it goes in the head. ANd put thread sealer on the bottom of the intake rocker studs.
The stock rocker just is a torque it down and forget about it set up.
A ARP rocker stud would make it adjustable. So you get it set where you want.
I guess I am saying pretty much what Jake is trying to say

Buy a stethoscope....harbor freight $5.00 and be sure.
Also check for exhaust leak(s) at manifold. Many times I've seen a ticking noise come from an exhaust leak at manifold or manifold flange.
If not leaks are found check like previously stated for an broken valve spring.Or turn over engine by hand with valve covers off to see if anything is obvious(problem) with valvetrain
