It's a door switch adjustment. If it's like my '89, the switch isn't the one by the hinges (like normal cars). It's the switch at the back of (one of) the door(s).
Changes in weatherstripping and/or the roof being out can increase the chances of the switch losing contact. When it loses contact for a sec, the lights come on.
Seems like there was an adjustment (or I added a shim) to fix the problem.

Sounds like your door ajar switches have gone ****-up. Mine did the same thing. Tell me, is your alarm horn sounding randomly, too, when the car's parked? That's another sure-fire sign. It's an easy fix. I believe the switches run about $15 bones each at the dealer and the FSM details how to swap them out.
