Default Magnaflow Performance Exhaust

Most of you know I installed the MPE in my LT4 Vette. This system has a "X" then the resonator which has another "X" inside then out to the rear mufflers. It sounds great and it has a great rumble but, yesterday I drove to Los Angeles and this thing it's getting louder and with lots of resonance inside (AND, I installed sound deadener and undercoating). Needless to say I could not enjoy the radio.

I read other members' threads and they removed the resonator and the resonance went away. If I remove the resonator, will this help?

Imagine how loud this would be with long tubes

Josh wilson said it helped him but he also has the walker Quiet flows. I thought these systems were designed to eliminate the res.?

Just a couple of thoughts.

First check the hangers, are they set up to absorb vibration and shock like the springed stock hangers?

I really don't understand the double x-pipe on the system. I know that an x-pipe causes sounds to run into each other with the goal of cancelling out the more unpleasant sounds. I don't know if having two creates a double negative effect?

My personal set-up is the stock system with the Magnaflow resonator going out through straight pipes in the rear with stock tips. I am not experiencing any troubles with resonance or drone, but yes I can definitely hear the exhaust. The one thing I did notice in your pic was that your tips seem to be flush under the bumper cover. Mine are about a 1/2 inch out and point slightly downward. I'm not positive, but maybe this could make a difference?

It almost looks like the resonator is rubbing on your body some.

The tips are fully extended now. In that picture they were flushed but now the extend pass the rear bumper. Not a lot because the mufflers come with a welded bracket and the extension is limited by it.

The resonator is a bit to the left but it is not touching the seatbelt bolt. I cut the tip of it to give it extra space.

Maybe this son of a bitch is meant to be that loud. Sounds beautiful at 5,500 RPMS

maybe it is! Anyway to get a video of it so others who have this system can give you an idea?

I know shakedown just installed a new magnaflow system on his. He has a clip of it in case you haven't seen/heard it.

My advice is for you to trade your vette for mine & you will no longer have resonance issuesEnjoy your car the way it is or invest in some corsa exhaust which should improve resonance problem, but remember you have a badass & powerful engine which has LT headers & a larger performance engine build. You have another car(DD) which I'm sure is quiet.Your car is a toy & will have to sacrifice some things for a higher performing car(suspension, engine, etc).Offer still stands:o

I have the 3" Magnaflow system on my 94 - which is I believe the same system the OP has. Mine doesn't really resonate at all inside the car. However, the resonator does come dangerously close to a bolt on the drivers side and as mentioned in the quote above that could cause some serious interior resonance. I believe someone in this thread suggested it was the seatbolt - that I cannot verify.

I put a small piece of heater hose over the bolt to ensure that I would not have metal on metal contact. I'll have to check on it next time I am under the car.

I love the sound. It isn't obnoxious around town but open it up and it is pretty sweet note. I kept the cats on.

UPDATE

Last weekend I found out the problem.

The 3" Magnaflow pipe is wider/bigger than stock. It was totally against the transmission bracket. I used the most demanding tool in any shop or garage in the world...a hammer and wrapped the pipe with "thermo wrap". Now, all the nasty resonance is gone. Quieter but enjoyable.

Glad to hear you found the problem.I too have a '96 LT-4 CE and Im thinking about going with the same sys you did. Bang for the buck it seams to be the best out there IMOP.My car is stock with a PCMforless tune. Will I notice a perf gain with the sys or is it strictly sound and looks? Either way doesnt matter just curious....ANY regrets?

Cat-Back exhaust may generate 5~8 horses MAX. You'll notice the increase on torque right away.

I've got the same system. it's stainless steel, 3" diameter with an integrated x-pipe for little money! I have no complaints. No huge power gains, but with the corvette tax on most aftermarket items, this exhaust system is a bargain!

so with this system is there resonance? If so, is it too much for a daily driver? Is it loud outside the car? Any other thoughts?

A video or two would be nice!

I drove 300 miles yesterday, with the stock cats, heat wrap and the pipe not touching the bracket it had no drone.
