Turned on my '91 Bose Gold system this morning as usual, nothing but a distinct hiss when in radio or CD mode. When the engine was turned off, I could hear the faint radio station I was tuned to in the background, but the hiss overwhelmed it even though the volume was all the way up.
The antenna goes up and down when the radio is turned on and off, respectively, and the dial shows everything as it should. Just nothing audible but the distinct hiss.
Is this a case of all four amps blowing out at once? A problem with the Bose CDM? Or is there a relay or fuse I need to check? Thanks~!
Sounds like your radio has blown a component in the main module. By googling, I found a business in Orlando that rebuilds these. I mailed it to them, they rebuilt it (replaced the innards) & mailed it back to me for about $150. Works like new.

Did your system just "hiss" with a tiny amount of radio program in the background? By main module, is that the Bose CDM?

That's what mine did when it went kaput! I replaced all the amps in the speakers and it played for 15 minutes and blew again. It now sports a nice Alpine unit with Infinity speakers.
I had a new CDM I was going to put in as well but I said the heck with it.
It didn't "hiss," per se. The problem was that I couldn't get any volume out of it. I could hear that it was on and I could hear that there was some sound, but only at a very low volume. I think they do refer to the main module as the CDM. I don't remember the name of the company I sent it to but you should be able to find it easily on Google. Good Luck...
Just an update. I went thru the Chart 6 tests. All checks on the relay and its socket are ok. No shorts and power is applied at terminal 4 when radio is on, but still nothing. Therefore it says to replace the radio receiver.
So those who said to replace the CDM win the prize!!!
I tested the stuff on my 90. If you pull the relay bose goes dead. if the ground becomes loose bose goes dead.
Jeff, I went thru all the steps in Chart 6 down to the last one. I even backprobed terminal 4 with the relay in place, and it was supplying 12V with the radio on, so that means the relay is working. If the relay is working, the manual (Chart 6) says to service the radio receiver, (CDM). That's why I'm going to replace the CDM.

go through doctordons. He can rebuild the cdm, seems very smart when it comes to the bose
You have to remove the dash pad to get to the CDM on the cars without a pass side airbag. Here is a pic of the CDM under the dash:
There are two nuts, and they should be removed (noted with green arrows). The nut on the left is actually not visible since it is on the side, and high up. I couldnt get that one back on because its obscured by wires. The CDM itself is shown by the red arrow.
There are two connectors on the driver side, and 3 on the pass side. However there are actually 4 places to plug into on the pass side. Quadrant 1 doesnt get a connector.
It took about 4 hours to do the job, and that's because I've removed the dash pad before. Figure a full day if its the first time. Good luck and thanks for all the replies!
