Am looking to go to a lower rear; maybe 4:10 or 4:11 in 96 LT4(see signature). Just want to change ring and pinion not pumpkin because I want to keep the original Dana 44 that came with the car as I have all other original parts. Any opinions? Also need a reference for a reputable rear end shop in New York preferably around the Hudson Valley area.
You can keep your rear, and I can build you a brand new one, everything new, housing, carrier, ring and pinion, bearings, clutches, front yoke, axles, etc. I have been looking in to this for awhile and I just started setting the part #'s up for the pieces the other day. I will build it with the Super 44's 4.11 gears for $1900 no core charge. Like I said this is everything brand new including the housing. By the way I build rears for Zip Products, you can call me at 800-962-9632 ext. 256 and my name is Justin
I'd give them a shot. I saw a few rears there when I purchased my LT1 bumper fromthem. Mackey and Panuzzo both used them to do the D44 conversion. These guys don't kid around. everything is glass beaded, clean and professionally set=up. Both Red 96's have a boatload of passes with street use and nary a whimper.
I have the Dana 36 in mine from Zip Products. This is the 4th diff. I have had rebuilt in my lifetime. (the others were not vettes) and I must say this is the only one that has been competely quite like the factory one. The other 3 were rebuilt by the dealer, (dodge, chevy, toyota) and they all made slight noise. some when letting off of the gas, some at set speeds etc. I guess the point I am trying to make, is to make sure whoever puts the diff. together for you knows what they are doing. I personally have complete confidence in Justin doing the job correctly, and I have not heard one complaint about his work. (they have sold quite a few of the diff. on here through the GP and I believe if there was any problems we would have heard about it.) Good luck in your decision.
