Sorry about the title, trying for something original. Okay, the other day I passed a guy that pulled out in front of me. In order to get around him quickly I punched it. Once I got around him I let off and right away the engine was running terrible. Dramatic loss of power. Backfire in the intake. Dead miss. The car has 130k. Any ideas?
We are neighbors so I have heard the car tonight. The car has a DEAD miss and a sporatic LOUD backfire into the intake.. Especially at idle. With throttle the backfire goes away, but the dead miss is still there. The more we listened to it it seemed to me like it could have skipped time but this seemed unlikely for the miles. So, I was thinking timing, but the broken intake valve spring is sounding like a good candidate. We do not know much on the history of this car but I wonder if 1.6/1 rockers were installed onto stock springs... The car is lowered and equipped with performance exhaust..
Use a timing light to see if the timing chain has jumped. Use the timing light on every plug wire to prove each plug is firing. Look inside the distributor cap with a bright light and look for carbon tracks. If a valve/valve spring has broken, then the compression test will find that.

Just my overcautious nature.. but I would stop running the engine and pull a valve cover or two and start looking.. If its a broken valve spring and it works its way around to dropping a keeper, or just leaving the valve hanging down for a piston to smack.. your gonna have scrap metal for an engine.. if its just one cylinder then the odds of being out of time causing it to fire when an intake valve is open isn't likely..
but if it were me.. I wouldn't run it at all until I determined the problem.. dropping a valve is sort of unrecoverable..

I agree. I do not have the tools or time necessary to complete a valve spring job. I am going to load it on a trailer and send it to the local grease monkey. I will let you guys know how it goes. Thanks for the help. If anyone has more to add please do! All of you have been a big help.
