Default Clutch master and slave replacement

My clutch slave is leaking, the mechanic said it is standard proceedure to replace both the master and slave. Is this correct? I have 125k on the car and I believe it is the original master, should I have it replaced too? thx

PS: He uses NAPA, should I go with this or get a knock off for a lot less on ebay?

Like most things, it depends. I do my own work, so I replaced my leaky slave today. If I need a Master in 6 months, no sweat. I'll do that, too.
But If I was leaving it at the shop, I'd get both done. You can expect, if you keep it for a while, it will need both. This way you only inconvenience yourself once. As to the parts, I think there's not much difference in clutch hydraulics. Sometimes there's one factory that supplies several parts houses. Generally you should go with the parts supplied by the mechanic. If you have a problem later, he'll stand behind his work.

Good luck!

Yeah I try to do what I can myself when I can. But I don't know that I will have time to get to my friends lift to do this, and I don't have ramps, and don't like to do this on jack stands if even enough room. I talked to the shop more and w the NAPA part is has a limited lifetime warranty so it will be worth it if it goes out again, even though 2x as much.
I will wait on the master since it works, and since there is no labor $ break of doing both together.

I replaced the slave cyl. on mine recently with a cast iron one from O-Riellies. I remember the guy commenting that they only showed 2 in stock at thier warehouse in Texas. I got the impression after those were sold, no more would be available. I paid $85.00 for mine.

If you get a lifetime warratny, that may be worthwhile. Just keep your receipt handy. I've read that they don't usually last more than a couple of years.

I hear ya on the replacement hassle at home. I put my car on jackstands on Sunday to do the work. Not much fun. But it sure is satisfying to know you've slain another dragon. Next weekend it's the rear wheel bearings. WooHoo!

I don't follow, why would I expect him to pay for a part he didn't work on? If it fails, I will take it in, I see no reason to replace working parts since I am not saving any $ doing both. Everything will fail eventually.

Yeah that is what I figure, I just replaced one about 2 years ago, but the original lasted 12+ years, go figure.
