Anyone have any tips on reaching the top nuts at the transmission side of a ZF? What size are the nuts and is there a particular wrench that works better than others?
I don't remember the size wrench but I just put it on the nut, turned the bolt and the wrench went into a bind against the tunnel then unscrewed the bolt out of the nut. No big deal.
front ones are 18mm, back ones are 21mm. i usually put an adjustable up top to hold on, then just socket wrench the bottom ones. until i get my beam plates next month!
It's been a couple of years since I did mine, but I think I was able to get an open end wrench on the upper nuts. I think I used the closed end with the wrench slightly off center and the bend in the wrench facing down.

Yep...open/box end wrench slid around the driver's side and up over the back will reach the nut(s). Removing the back nut first helps.
After getting both the front and rear of the c-beam loose, wait until the trans bolts are removed to complete removal of the c-beam. With the trans loose, you can move the c-beam forward (to the driver's side of the transmission) and get it out w/o disconnecting the e-brake cable.
I don't remember the bolt sizes but the rears were different than the front -- meaning the 18mm/21mm suggestion is likely to be correct.
